"year 1432 A.D., the day May 26th at five p.m., a woman named Giannetta, hailing from the town of Caravaggio, 32 year old, daughter of a Pietro Vacchi and married to Francesco Varoli, well known for her very virtuous behavior, Christian mercy, sincerely honest conduct, was outside the inhabited centre, on the way to Misano, worrying on how to carry home the grass bundles she had mowed for her animals. Suddenly she, Giannetta, saw an awesomely beautiful lady fluctuating from above and stopping next to her. The lady was very tall, she had a delicate complexion and breathtaking and unimaginable beauty, dressed in a blue dress with a white veil covering her head. Giannetta, awestruck by the venerable looks of the lady, exclaimed: "Virgin Mary!" and the lady answered: "Don’t be afraid my daughter, it’s really me. Stop and kneel down in prayer" (1)
"...for seven years I begged mercy to my son for the evil deeds of mankind...
I want you to tell them to fast with bread and water every Friday and, after the vesper, celebrate the Saturday with thankfulness for the many and great favors obtained from my Son through my intercession … I will confirm your words with such great signs that nobody will doubt the truth of what you said "
Since then the presence of believers and ill people asking for a miracle is constant in the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Fonte in Caravaggio.
A water stream originated where the Virgin appeared and is still there as a witness of the divine grace and maternal intercession of the Mother of God.
The majestic basilica and the huge avenue leading there, the wide squares and porches offer the pilgrims a perfect place for prayer, celebration of reconciliation and penitence, and invocation of inner and physical healing, and gratitude for the graces received.
